How earthquakes trigger tsunamis and what to watch for
Tsunamis are large ocean waves triggered by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. Subduction zone earthquakes with vertical displacement of the seafloor are the most common cause. Tsunami waves travel at speeds up to 800 km/h in deep water and can be over 30m high when reaching shore.
