Understanding the difference between magnitude scales and intensity scales
Magnitude measures the energy released at the earthquake's source using seismograph data. It's a single number per earthquake. Intensity measures the effects at specific locations using the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, ranging from I (not felt) to XII (total destruction).
